Als es auf dem Gipfel seines Erfolges und seiner Macht war, passierte mit SEGA etwas Seltsames: Das Unternehmen begann, ständig neue Dinge zu veröffentlichen. Die SEGA CD, die 32X — die Konsumenten waren ein wenig verwirrt und rasch von dem Angebot übersättigt, was zur Folge hatte, dass sie, als SEGA seine nächste „echte“ Konsole veröffentlichte, die SEGA Saturn, nicht mehr dafür interessierten. Aber das hielt SEGA nicht davon ab, weitere Prototypen für verschiedene Typen von Hardware zu bauen. Sie haben selbstverständlich von der Dreamcast gehört und der Name ‚SEGA Neptune’ wurde auf Spielplätzen geflüstert wie ein seltsamer urbaner Mythos – aber die SEGA Pluto? Dieser Name dürfte Ihnen bis jetzt unbekannt gewesen sein, aber anscheinend wurde daran gearbeitet - es existieren sogar zwei Prototypen, die dies bezeugen.
Die SEGA Pluto, deren Existenz vom Forennutzer Super Magnetic, der anscheinend Ende der 1990-er für SEGA arbeitete, öffentlich gemacht wurde, der allem, war eine SEGA Saturn mit Online-Verbindung. Er erhielt die Konsole von einem anderen Mitarbeiter, der aus dem Unternehmen ausscheiden musste.
“Sega is a company with a history of turmoil“, erklärte er. “Employee turnover is a sad theme, and the Sonic Reaper (as we call him) strikes all too frequently. As such, the past gets forgotten quickly — treasures from the previous generation are quickly cast aside, as a new regime tries to make a name for themselves (or justify their existence). As such, some of said treasures get left on laid-off-peoples’ desks. And in a beautiful twist of fate, this beauty ended up finding its way to my desk, and then in a box with the rest of my stuff when I left Sega.”
Allem Anschein nach wurden nur zwei dieser Prototypen gefertigt. Dies ist Nummer 2.
Aber warum steht oben drauf der Name Saturn? Anscheinend überlegte man bei SEGA, diese Konsole als zweite Generation der Saturn zu vermarkten.
“This thing is a beast, and definitely the heaviest console I’ve ever held in my hands“, schildertSuper Magnetic. “The front features two controller ports, and on top you have a flip-top drive bay, a cart slot, a Power button, and the venerable Reset button. Note that the logo still says Saturn, so I’m guessing the Pluto codename was simply that, and they were thinking of branding it with the Saturn name. (The logo is printed on production-style though, so I’m guessing they were fairly serious about this one.) The left and right sides feature beautiful-and-exotic vents, while the back is standard Saturn, save for the Netlink ports. The bottom has nothing of note except for the “PLUTO-02″ sticker (which is, of course, of note).”
Besonders bemerkenswert ist, dass die Konsole noch immer funktioniert. Super Magnetic besorgte sich ein Netzkabel und probierte es aus. Sehen Sie selbst…
Super Magnetic zufolge läuft die Konsole im Prinzip wie eine US NTSC SEGA Saturn, aber trotzdem – was für ein unglaubliches Stück Videospielgeschichte.
