Die Xbox One muss nicht ständig online sein, aber sie muss online sein. Nicht nur gelegentlich einmal – einmal pro Tag, wenn man Microsoft Vice President Phil Harrison glauben darf.
In einer Q&A Session auf der offiziellen Pressesite für die neue Xbox steht eine seltsam formulierte Antwort auf die Frage nach der „always-on“ Internetverbindung: „No, it does not have to be always connected, but Xbox One does require a connection to the Internet."
Im Rahmen des gestrigen Events in Redmond wurde Phil Harrison gebeten, dies genauer zu erläutern. Und was Harrison sagte, wird Spielern, die ihre Xbox auf Militärbasen oder an anderen Orten ohne Internetverbindung nützen müssen oder wollen, nicht behagen.
„There are many devices in your life that require the Internet to function“, erklärte er. „Xbox One is no different in that it requires, at some point in the beginning and at various times through its on state, to connect to our cloud and to our Internet. That is to deliver Xbox Live functionality, that is to deliver download content to you, that is to deliver some of the innovations around TV and entertainment that we showed today. But it doesn’t require it to be online all the time."
Und wie oft wird die Internetverbindung überprüft/benötigt? „Das hängt von der Art der Nutzung ab“, meinte Harrison.
"For single-player games that don’t require connectivity to Xbox Live, you should be able to play those without interruption should your Internet connection go down. Blu-ray movies and other downloaded entertainment should be accessible when your Internet connection may be interrupted. But the device is fundamentally designed to be expanded and extended by the Internet as many devices are today."
Und hier ist der Paukenschlag:
Presse: Wenn ich ein Single-Player-Spiel spiele, muss ich dann einmal pro Stunde oder irgendetwas in der Art online sein? Oder kann ich wochenlang ohne Internetverbindung spielen?
Harrison: Ich glaube, es sind 24 Stunden.
Presse: Ich muss also einmal am Tag online gehen.
Harrison: Korrekt.
Das System ist so gebaut, dass es auch funktioniert, wenn die Internetverbindung unterbrochen wird oder einmal einige Stunden gar nicht verfügbar ist, aber Sie müssen sich Harrison zufolge doch mindestens einmal am Tag mit dem Internet verbinden. Ich weiß nicht genau, was passiert, wenn man nicht einmal am Tag online geht – und dieser Zeitrahmen könnte sich noch ändern -, aber das hört sich für diejenigen, die gehofft haben, die Xbox One auf Dauer ohne Internet nützen zu können, nicht gut an.
Doch bei Microsoft scheint man derzeit nicht so genau zu wissen, was Sache ist. Vor kurzem ließ man Polygon wissen, dass Harrisons Ausführungen nur ein „potenzielles Szenario“ darstellen.
„While Phil [Harrison] discussed many potential scenarios around games on Xbox One, today we have only confirmed that we designed Xbox One to enable our customers to trade in and resell games at retail," a Microsoft rep said. "There have been reports of a specific time period — those were discussions of potential scenarios, but we have not confirmed any details today, nor will we be."
