Als ich zum ersten Mal auf den Hype rund um Lana Del Rey und ihren Hit „Video Games“ aufmerksam wurde, fragte ich mich, ob es darin vielleicht wirklich um Videospiele geht. Es stellte sich rasch heraus, dass dies nicht der Fall ist.
In einem Interview mit Kill Screen beschrieb Lana Del Rey die Inspiration für den Song wie folgt:
I would consider it a hopeful song. It was a time in my life when I really enjoyed the simple things in life, like watching my boyfriend play videogames and just hanging out together. It was a time when I let go of my ambitions for musical success and just started focusing on the people around me—and him. And that was just what he liked to do. The game that I would always watch him play was World of Warcraft. He was always yelling at the other players.
Okay, das ist ein guter Grund für einen Song, aber wäre es nicht viel cooler, wenn es in „Video Games“ wirklich um… nun ja… Videospiele ginge? Der Rapper-artige Alex Hanly fragte sich das auch und bastelte diese charmante, lustige (und überraschend aufrichtige) Nummer zusammen, die Lana Del Reys Song sampelt, aber in etwas verwandelt, das dem Titel eher entspricht. Gut gemacht.
